Sunol Coffee House and Cafe

Welcome to the Sunol Coffee House and Cafe. Established in 1906, this small eatery has been the social center of Sunol for almost a hundred years. Its side room once housed the town's telephone exchange, and any news worth knowing is likely to be heard here first. This charming, old fashioned family cafe is currently run by the Ean family, with mom Lorena in charge of the kitchen, dad Lyse pitching in on weekends - when he's not in their native Cambodia, that is...but more about that later.

The Eans live in Castro Valley and are often helped in the restaurant by four of their five children - baby Victor being not quite two yet. Their oldest is Charlie, 19, a student at Chabot Community College. Next comes Victoria, 18, a student at Cal State University in San Francisco, and then Sophie, 15, a freshman at Castro Valley High School, and Richard, 12, a student at Canyon Middle School. Extended family sometimes show up to help out, including cousin Rena Bunly, 16, a student at Fremont High School in Oakland. The resaurant's other employees include family friend Polly and Sunolians Gayle, Shannon, Nancy, and Dolores.

Come on in! The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday. There's a full breakfast complimented by fresh donuts and pastries brought in by Lorena daily from Lyse's brother's Hometown Donuts in Oakland. The lunch menu features hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, salads and homemade soups, and after 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, there's a wonderful Chinese dinner menu featuring stir fries, barbecued meats and noodle dishes. The Cambodian touches, like lemon grass, make the dinner menu interesting as well as delicious. Soft drinks, beer, wine, juices, coffee and tea are served.

Enjoy Sunol's charm. The cafe's windows look out on the town's Main Street, with a view of the antique store across the street from one side and the Sunol Train Station from the other. You can pick up a copy of Connie and Allen DeGrange's book, A Town Called Sunol, train schedules, order blanks and samples of artist Gary Winter's charming Sunol miniatures.
